Types of Trencher We Buy
Ride-on chain trenchers — the most common type; a self-propelled machine with a rotating chain fitted with cutting teeth that excavates a narrow trench to a controlled depth. Used for utility cables, water pipes, drainage, and agricultural drainage. Trenching depth typically 0.3m–2.5m; trench width 100–500mm.
Rock saws / rock wheel trenchers — a circular cutting wheel fitted with carbide-tipped picks for cutting through rock, concrete, and very hard ground. Used in road reinstatement, tunnelling, and quarrying access trenching.
Excavator-mounted chain trenchers — chain trencher attachments fitted to standard excavators via a quick hitch. Used where a dedicated ride-on trencher is impractical due to access restrictions.
Vibratory cable plows — bury cable or pipe without excavating a trench; a vibrating blade is forced through the ground, the cable or pipe feeds behind it, and the ground closes up. Minimal surface disruption; used extensively in agricultural cable and drainage work and increasingly in rural fibre installation.
Mini / pedestrian trenchers — walk-behind chain trenchers for confined spaces, residential cable laying, and landscaping. Used by electricians, plumbers, and landscapers.
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rigs — for trenchless cable and pipe installation under roads, rivers, and obstacles; distinct from conventional trenchers but frequently bought and sold alongside them.

Vermeer (USA) — the most widely recognised trencher brand globally, and the most commonly specified ride-on trencher in the UK utilities and civil market. Vermeer equipment holds value well in the used market. Key models:

Ditch Witch (USA) — the other major trencher brand with a long UK history; particularly strong in the cable and pipeline installation market. Key models:

- HDD Series: JT5, JT9, JT20, JT24, JT25, JT30AT — directional drilling rigs

Tesmec (Italy) — specialist in large-scale chain trenching for pipeline and cable installation. Key models: TRS 850, TRS 900, TRS 950 — high-output trenching for telecom and power cable installation; less common in the UK than Vermeer but present on major infrastructure contracts.
Kinshofer (Germany) — manufacturer of excavator-mounted chain trencher attachments. Key models: MT 400, MT 500, MT 600, MT 700 — fitted to 1.5–20 tonne excavators.
Auger Torque (Australia — UK based) — earth drill and trencher attachments for excavators; the MT Series (Maxi-Trencher) is widely used in the UK.
Brokk (Sweden) — remote-controlled demolition robots with trenching and cutting attachments; used in confined spaces.
What Affects Trencher Value?
Chain and sprocket condition. The cutting chain, teeth, and drive sprocket are wear items on any chain trencher — a new chain set can cost £2,000–£6,000 depending on machine size. Buyers always ask about chain condition.
Digging depth and width capability. Greater depth and width capability expands the machine's application range and supports value. A trencher capable of 2m depth is worth more than an equivalent limited to 1m.
Ground conditions the machine was used in. A rock saw or hard-ground trencher that's been cutting concrete or rock will show more wear than one used on agricultural land — the nature of previous work matters.
Undercarriage condition (tracked machines). Rubber tracks wear with use; replacement is expensive. Track condition is checked on any tracked trencher.
Engine condition and hours. Trenchers are often worked hard; engine hours and condition are assessed carefully.
Attachments and tooling included. Spare chains, different width digging bars, rock wheel attachments, and backfill blades add value if included.
