Forestry machinery is among the most specialist and highest-value plant equipment in the UK market. Harvesters and forwarders represent investments of hundreds of thousands of pounds, and when the time comes to sell — whether upgrading, contract change, or business disposal — the buyer pool is specialist and international.
Types of Forestry Equipment We Buy
Forestry harvesters — self-propelled tracked or wheeled machines that fell, debranch, and cut trees to length in a single pass. The harvesting head — a complex piece of hydraulic engineering that grips, debranches, and measures the tree — is as important as the base machine. Used in commercial timber production, thinning operations, and large-scale forestry management.
Forwarders — tracked or wheeled machines that collect cut timber from the harvesting area and transport it to a roadside stack. The articulated body, grapple-equipped crane, and load bunk are the key functional components. Used always in combination with a harvester or chainsaw cutting operation.
Harvesting heads / heads only — the harvesting head (also called a processor head) can be sold separately from the base machine; heads are valuable assets in their own right.
Mulchers / forestry mulchers — tracked or wheeled machines with a hydraulic mulching drum attachment used to clear undergrowth, brash, and small-diameter timber; widely used in land clearance, habitat management, and scrub control.
Wood chippers — self-propelled or PTO-driven machines that reduce timber into wood chip for biomass or composting. Key brands: Bandit, Vermeer, Jenz, Morbark, Doppstadt.
Forestry tractors with forestry equipment — conventional agricultural tractors fitted with forestry equipment such as winches, cranes, and trailers for small-scale forestry and woodland management.

Ponsse (Finland) — one of the two global premium brands for forestry harvesters and forwarders. Ponsse UK (based in Annan, Dumfriesshire) provides UK sales, service, and used machine support. Key models:

Komatsu Forest (Sweden) — formed from Valmet Forest, a major global brand. Key models:
- Harvesters: 901X, 931XC, 951XC, 981XC — the 931XC and 951XC are most commonly traded
- Forwarders: 835, 845, 855, 865, 875, 895 — the 855 and 865 are the most actively traded; the 895 is the flagship 8-wheel 20-tonne unit
- Tigercat (Canada) — growing UK presence in specialist harvesting and processing applications. Key models: 855E, 880, 1055, 1075B harvesters; 620E, 628, 830 forwarders.
- Eco Log (Sweden) — premium Scandinavian manufacturer growing its UK presence. Key models: 560D, 580C, 590G harvesters.
- Rottne (Sweden) — well-regarded harvester and forwarder brand; H8D, H11D, H14D harvesters; F13C, F15C forwarders.
- Bandit (USA) — leading wood chipper brand. Key models: Bandit 65XP, 90XP, 150XP, 200XP, 250XP, 990XP, 3590XP.

What Drives Forestry Equipment Value?
Hours — and which hours matter. For harvesters and forwarders, total machine hours, crane hours, and harvesting head hours should all be disclosed. The harvesting head typically accumulates fewer hours than the machine and wears at a different rate. A machine with 10,000 total hours but only 6,000 head hours is in a different position from one with matched high figures.
Head manufacturer and model. The harvesting head is a major component of the harvester's value. Key head manufacturers: Ponsse H7, H8, H10 (Ponsse machines); John Deere 762, H415, H425 (JD machines); Log Max (fitted to various brands); SP Maskiner heads; Waratah heads (Deere). A head in good condition with recent saw unit and rollers adds meaningful value.
Service history. Given the complexity and cost of forestry machinery, a documented service history — ideally from the brand's own dealer — is highly valued. Missing or incomplete history is a significant red flag.
Tyre or track condition. Forwarders and 8-wheel harvesters use large flotation tyres — a full set can cost £15,000–£30,000. Track condition on tracked machines is checked carefully. Good rubber or tracks add meaningful value.
Crane reach and condition. The loading crane on a forwarder (typically 7–10m reach) is assessed for hydraulic condition, wear in pivots, and grab condition.
