Sell My Excavator Buckets and Attachments UK

31 July 20268 min read

Plant attachments are bought and sold constantly in the UK — a good set of buckets or a well-maintained hydraulic breaker can be worth significant money to the right buyer. Whether you're selling individual items or a complete attachment package alongside a machine, this guide covers what you have, what it's worth, and how to sell it.

Types of Attachment We Buy

Excavator buckets are the most commonly traded attachment category. Types include:

  • GP (General Purpose) dig bucket — standard digging bucket; the most traded type
  • Riddle / skeleton bucket — screening bucket for separating material; used in landscaping, demolition, and topsoil work
  • Tilting bucket — allows tilt without a tiltrotator; popular for drainage and grading work
  • Rock / heavy duty bucket — reinforced bucket for breaking rock and hard material; Hardox steel construction adds value
  • Ditch cleaning / grading bucket — wide, flat bucket for profiling ditches and slopes
  • 4-in-1 / clamshell bucket — opens and closes for grabbing and loading; popular on mini diggers and backhoe loaders

Quick hitches and couplers allow rapid attachment changes without the operator leaving the cab. Types include:

  • Manual quick hitch — requires the operator to exit the cab to lock the safety pin; the basic type
  • Hydraulic quick coupler / hitch — fully hydraulic operation from the cab; the modern standard; significantly more valuable than manual

Key brands: Engcon, Steelwrist, OilQuick, Rototilt, Miller (Miller UK — one of the most commonly seen hitch brands in the UK), Lehnhoff, Verachtert, Geith.

Tiltrotators rotate the attachment 360° and tilt it ±45°, giving the operator full orientation control of the bucket or tool. Increasingly specified on UK excavators. Key brands:

  • Rototilt (Sweden)RC1, RC2, RC3, RC4, RC4QC, R3, R4, R6, R8 — the most recognised tiltrotator brand globally; RC4 and R6 are the most commonly traded models in the UK
  • Steelwrist (Sweden)X02, X03, X04, X05, X06, X07, X08 — strong alternative to Rototilt with similar resale values
  • Engcon (Sweden)EC002, EC003, EC004, EC206, EC209, EC219 — the third major tiltrotator brand; popular in Scandinavia and growing UK presence

Hydraulic breakers / hammers are the most widely used power attachment after buckets. Key brands:

  • Atlas Copco / EpirocHB 2000, HB 2500, HB 3100, HB 3600 (heavy range); SB 102, SB 152, SB 202 (light range) — the benchmark breaker brand in the UK market
  • Montabert (France)V43, V55, V65, V500, V1000 — consistent UK presence
  • Indeco (Italy)HP series (HP 350, HP 700, HP 1500, HP 3000) — strong resale values
  • NPK (Japan / Korea) — widely used in hire fleets; H-series and E-series models
  • Furukawa (Japan)F series (F6, F9, F12, F15, F22, F35) — reliable and actively traded
  • JCB and CAT breakers also appear regularly on UK machines

Grapples and grabs — for material handling, demolition, and sorting:

  • Sorting / orange peel grapple — for scrap, demolition, and waste handling
  • Timber / log grapple — for forestry and arboricultural work
  • Concrete / demolition grapple — for breaking and sorting concrete; often paired with a pulveriser
  • Clamshell grab — for bulk material handling

Key brands: Kinshofer, Auger Torque, Mantovanibenne (MBI), Labounty, Genesis, Volvo CE attachments, JCB attachments.

Hydraulic augers / earth drills — for post holes, piling, and foundation work. Key brands: Auger Torque (Australian manufacturer with strong UK presence), Pengo, McMillen, Digga.

What Affects Attachment Value?

Make and manufacturer. A genuine Rototilt or Steelwrist tiltrotator commands two to three times the value of a no-name Chinese equivalent. Miller and OilQuick hitches trade above unknown brands. Known breaker brands (Atlas Copco, Indeco, Montabert) achieve premiums over unbranded equivalents.

Compatibility pin size. Attachments are built to fit specific machine weight classes (usually defined by pin size — S20, S40, S60, S70 etc.). An attachment that fits the most common machine sizes (3–6 tonne, 8–14 tonne, 14–22 tonne) is more liquid than one built for unusual pin centres.

Condition of wear components. On buckets: cutting edge, side cutters, and teeth wear. On breakers: piston wear, chisel condition. On tiltrotators: rotary seal condition, body wear.

Quick hitch compatibility. An attachment that comes with or is compatible with a recognised quick hitch system (Miller, OilQuick, Steelwrist) is worth more than one that requires pins only.
