Sell My Asphalt Equipment — Pavers, Planers, Rollers and More

30 July 20267 min read

Asphalt equipment sits at the specialist end of the used plant market. Whether you're selling a tracked paver that's done its mileage on a highways contract, a cold planer being retired from the fleet, or a tandem roller that's surplus to requirements — these machines need a buyer who understands what they're looking at.

Types of Asphalt Equipment We Buy

Asphalt pavers (wheeled and tracked) lay hot mix asphalt to a precise width, depth, and surface profile. The paving width, screed type (tamping/vibrating or high compaction), and hours are the key value factors.

Cold planers / road milling machines remove existing asphalt surfaces to a controlled depth prior to resurfacing. Drum width, cutting depth, engine hours, and drum condition (pick wear) are critical.

Tandem rollers (double drum) compact asphalt immediately behind the paver. The most actively traded type of compaction equipment in the road construction market.

Single drum compactors are used for soil and sub-base compaction as well as asphalt. Covered separately in our Rollers/Compactors guide.

Material transfer vehicles (MTVs) and remixing machines are specialist pieces — lower volume but actively traded on major highways contracts.

Major Manufacturers

Vögele (Germany — Wirtgen Group): The premium benchmark for asphalt pavers globally. Key models include the Super 800i, Super 1800-3i, Super 2100-3i, and Vision 5200-2. Vögele pavers consistently achieve the strongest resale values of any paver brand — the integrated ErgoPlus control system and AB 600 / SB 300 screed options are highly regarded by buyers.

Wirtgen (Germany — Wirtgen Group): The global leader in cold milling / road planing. Key models: W 50 DC, W 100 Fi, W 130 Fi, W 200 Fi, W 250 Fi — the W 100 Fi and W 200 Fi are the most commonly traded in the UK market. Drum condition and picks remaining are the key value drivers on planers.

Dynapac (Sweden — Fayat Group): Strong UK presence across both pavers and rollers. Paver models include SD2500CS, SD2500WS, F1000CS, F1000WS. Tandem roller models: CC900, CC1000, CC1200, CC4200. Dynapac equipment holds value well and is actively sought after in the UK market.

Bomag (Germany — Fayat Group): One of the most recognised compaction brands in the UK. Paver models: BF 300 P, BF 600 P, BF 800 P. Tandem rollers: BW 80 AD, BW 100 AD, BW 120 AD, BW 138 AD, BW 161 AD. Bomag rollers are among the most commonly traded compaction machines in the UK.

Caterpillar (USA): CAT pavers — AP600, AP655F, AP1055F — are well regarded in the UK market, particularly on larger highway contracts. Backed by CAT's dealer network and strong parts support.

Ammann (Switzerland): Growing UK market share. Paver models: AFW 150-2, AFW 350, AFW 500, AFW 900. Tandem rollers: ARX 12, ARX 16, ARX 23, ARX 26.

Hamm (Germany — Wirtgen Group): Specialist compaction equipment. Tandem rollers: HD 8 VV, HD 10 VV, HD 12 VV, HD 13 VV, HD+ 90i. Hamm is the preferred compaction brand alongside Bomag for UK road contractors.

What Affects the Value of Asphalt Equipment?

Hours and production output. Pavers and planers accumulate hours quickly on major contracts. A paver at 4,000–6,000 hours is considered well-used; below 2,500 hours is considered low.

Drum and pick condition (planers). The cutting drum on a cold planer is expensive to rebuild — a new set of picks can cost £10,000–£30,000 depending on drum width. Buyers assess pick wear and drum condition directly; poor condition is discounted aggressively.

Screed condition (pavers). Worn or warped screed plates affect mat quality. Screed condition is scrutinised carefully and factored into offers.

Conveyor and auger condition (pavers). Wear on the conveyor flights and auger paddles is expected but significant wear increases the buyer's maintenance cost.

Service history. Given the complexity and cost of asphalt equipment, a documented service history adds significant confidence and value.
