Liebherr sits at the premium end of the UK excavator market. The machines are engineered to a standard that owners are generally very loyal to, and the brand has a genuine reputation for hydraulic quality and structural durability.
What that means when you're selling is a smaller buyer pool than CAT or JCB, but a more committed one — and a machine that holds value well provided it's presented properly and the service history is there.
Understanding the Model Numbering
Liebherr's naming is logical once you know the pattern.
R = crawler (tracked) excavator. A = wheeled excavator. LH = material handler.
The number that follows relates broadly to size class: R 914 is around 14–22 tonnes depending on configuration, R 926 around 25 tonnes, R 936 around 36 tonnes, R 946 around 45 tonnes.
Suffixes:
- Compact — reduced tail swing, for confined sites
- Litronic — Liebherr's electronic engine and hydraulic management system, standard across the modern range
- LC — Long Carriage; wider, more stable undercarriage. Standard on most UK machines
- HDSL — heavy duty, longer undercarriage
- G6 / G8 — generation markers on newer machines
The Range
Compact crawler excavators:
R 914 Compact, R 918 Compact, R 920 Compact, R 922, R 924 Compact, R 926 Compact. The R 914 Compact is the smallest Liebherr crawler excavator, featuring a powerful diesel engine and particularly high break-out forces.
These are the reduced tail swing machines, valuable on urban sites, roadworks and anywhere the counterweight can't overhang.
Standard crawler excavators:
R 914, R 918, R 920, R 922, R 924, R 926, R 930, R 936, R 938, R 945, R 946, R 950, R 956, R 960, R 966, R 970, R 976, R 980.
The R 926, R 936 and R 946 are the most commonly traded in the UK used market. Roughly, an R 924 competes with a CAT 323 and Komatsu PC210; an R 926 sits against a CAT 325; an R 936 against a CAT 336.
Wheeled excavators:
A 910 Compact, A 911 Compact, A 912 Compact, A 914, A 918, A 920, A 922 Rail, A 924, A 926. Liebherr wheeled excavators are particularly well regarded — the A 918 and A 924 are strong sellers in UK utilities, rail and roadworks.

What Buyers Assess on a Liebherr
Undercarriage. As with any tracked machine, the single biggest cost item. On a 36-tonne machine a full undercarriage rebuild runs to £25,000–£40,000. Buyers measure link height, bush and roller wear. Quote the percentage remaining and be honest — Liebherr buyers tend to be experienced and will check.
Hydraulics. This is where Liebherr's reputation sits, and it cuts both ways. Buyers expect Liebherr hydraulics to be smooth and precise. Any slew drift, slow ram speed, or judder on the boom gets scrutinised harder than it would on a lesser brand, because it suggests neglect rather than normal wear.
Litronic diagnostics. Pull the fault history off the machine before sale. A clean log is a strong selling point; a machine with stored faults the seller can't explain is a worry.
Attachments and hitch. Hydraulic quick hitch and a good bucket set adds real money. A tiltrotator — particularly an Engcon or Steelwrist — adds £8,000–£18,000 depending on size. Liebherr machines are often specified with tiltrotators in the UK, so mention it prominently if fitted.
Piping. Breaker lines, shear circuit, rotation circuit. Each extra circuit widens the buyer pool.
Service history. Matters more on Liebherr than on most brands. The dealer network is smaller than CAT's or JCB's, and buyers want reassurance the machine has been maintained by someone who knew it. Full Liebherr dealer history is the strongest provenance you can have.
Hours. Under 5,000 on a post-2016 machine is good. 5,000–9,000 is the active market. Above 12,000 the discount steepens noticeably.
Selling a Liebherr — Practical Advice
Don't rush it, and don't auction it cheap. Liebherr buyers are a smaller, more specific group than CAT buyers — plant hire firms, quarry operators and civils contractors who have chosen the brand deliberately. Those buyers will pay properly for the right machine, but they aren't browsing every listing on the market. A Liebherr dumped into a general auction often makes less than it should.
Present the hydraulics. Video of the machine working — full slew, boom and stick through their range, no drift, no judder — does more for a Liebherr sale than photos alone. It directly addresses the thing buyers care most about.
Lead with the spec. Tiltrotator, hitch, piping, GPS. These are exactly what the Liebherr buyer pool is looking for and they justify a higher asking price.
Consider the export angle. Liebherr is a genuinely global brand with very strong recognition across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. That gives a floor under prices on older or higher-hours machines that can be slow to move domestically. We price against both markets.
